Being stuck in an elevator is one of people’s biggest fears and a local woman learned that the hard way last week.
Residents at an apartment in Nam-gu are up in arms after a woman was stuck in an elevator for an hour because the manager was worried about possible damage to the door.
A 42-year-old woman entered the elevator on the first floor of her Daeyeon-dong apartment last Friday evening when the doors suddenly shut and she became trapped.
After alerting a security guard through the emergency phone who showed up after eight minutes and failed to help, she called 119 emergency services.
After arriving in seven minutes, 119 rescuers tried to use a compressor to open the door, but was stopped by the manager of the apartment who seemed more concerned about the damage to the elevator than her safety.
The 119 team eventually opened the door after the woman began showing symptoms of shock and duress due to claustrophobia.
She was eventually freed and admitted to the hospital suffering extreme mental stress.
Police are considering pressing charges charges against the 47-year-old manager, who had just started working there two days before the incident.
