The Busan Beaches Officially Open

BUSAN, South Korea — The summer beach season has returned and once again will extend 40 days longer than usual this year at four of the major beaches. Haeundae, Gwangalli, Seongjong and Songdo beaches will open today through September 10, while Dadaepo, Imrang and Ilgwang beaches will be open for swimming for the usual two-month period between July 1 until August 31.

Though quite unusual, the swimming season in Korea is usually limited to July and August, but city officials are extending the period again this year to encourage more people to use the beaches. Public facilities, including beach parasols, changing rooms, showers, foot washers, drinking water fountains and public restrooms will be open to the public.

At the Gwangalli and Songdo beaches, there will be street performances, as well as a ton of water sports available, including windsurfing, yachting, kayaking and canoeing.

According to the Busan City News website, cultural and art performances and various other programs taking place around the beaches will attract more people to the beach. From this year, beach-goers need to be aware that all seven beaches in Busan are designated as no-smoking zones. Smokers at the beaches will be fined 20,000 won. Visitors to Haeundae Beach also can use a “smart beach system” to rent beach gear.
