The Grand Theater at Busan Citizens’ Hall is set to receive upgrades aimed at making it a more suitable venue for K-pop and other popular music performances.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency announced September 9 that Busan Citizens’ Hall was selected for the Popular Music Performance Environment Improvement Project, along with Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province and Chiak Gymnasium in Wonju.
The program is designed to convert existing sports and multipurpose facilities into better-equipped concert venues rather than relying solely on the construction of new performance halls. Selected facilities can receive up to 2 billion won in government funding for equipment and other improvements needed for popular music performances.
Busan Citizens’ Hall’s Grand Theater has 1,624 seats and is expected to accommodate concerts and other music events in the region following the upgrades.
Goyang Sports Complex, with around 43,000 seats, was selected as a large-scale venue serving the Seoul metropolitan area, while Wonju’s 2,330-seat Chiak Gymnasium will receive support as a regional venue.
The ministry plans to select two additional facilities outside the Seoul metropolitan area later this month, focusing on the Jeolla, Chungcheong and Jeju regions.
