The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has been officially recognized as an “A Festival” under the newly reformed accreditation system of the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations (FIAPF), placing it among a select group of 17 major film festivals worldwide.
With the designation, BIFF joins globally renowned festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastián. The recognition highlights the festival’s growing influence and confirms its position as one of the leading international film events.
FIAPF, founded in 1933, is the global body responsible for accrediting film festivals based on professional standards and industry credibility. In a recent overhaul of its accreditation program, the organization replaced its previous multi category system with a single unified framework. The new “A Festival” classification identifies festivals that demonstrate the highest level of global impact.
The evaluation process considers two years of quantitative and qualitative data across several areas, including film selection, industry programs, press and promotion, and audience engagement.
BIFF first received FIAPF accreditation in 1997, becoming the first Korean festival to gain recognition from the organization. It was also selected as a member of the FIAPF Festivals Committee in 2018, a role it continues to hold.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 6 to October 15 at the Busan Cinema Center and venues across the city.
