More Food Trucks Coming in 2017, But Not Everyone’s Happy

The city of Busan plans to add over a 100 new food trucks to the local outdoor dining scene next year, but not everyone is happy with the plan.

The city plans to add 59 of the new trucks to the Nakdong River Ecological Park, in a bid to draw more visitors to the area. The move is hoping to spur more tourist interest in the park and model it after Seoul’s Dokaebiya Market.

Where the new trucks are planned to be around Busan

Nakdong – 59

Haeundae-gu – 11

Geumjung-gu – 8

Yeongdo-gu – 5

Dong-gu, Saha-gu, Gangseo-gu – 4

Seo-gu, Sasang-gu – 3

Joong-gu, Nam-gu, Dongnae-gu, Buk-gu, Gijang-gu, Suyeong-gu – 2

Yeonje-gu, Busanjin-gu – 1

However, critics are noting that 50 of the planned food trucks are set to be put under the Gupo Bridge and that there is not enough foot traffic to support that amount of businesses. The city decided to move the majority of the planned trucks into the park to avoid opposition from the local business district.

Since the lifting of food truck restrictions two years ago, most trucks have failed to sustain a profitable business. Excessive goals relative to the population size has also been noted.

As of October, Seoul has 110 food trucks and Gyeonggi-do has 69, both with much higher populations than Busan. Haeundae-gu, which has 11 new trucks slated to open next year, operated a hot dog truck for three months this year in front of the district office before it closed due to lack of profitability. Haeundae Beach had five food trucks at the north-end of the beach during the busy summer season, though far away from the potential of thousands of beach goers.

The city hopes the food trucks will create youth jobs and help revitalize the local economy.
