The 2026 World Heritage Festival for the Gaya Tumuli has opened, beginning 14 days of events across seven UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Running through September 10 under the theme “Walking Together,” the festival features performances, exhibitions and hands-on programs exploring the history and culture of the ancient Gaya confederacy.
Events will take place at the Daeseong-dong Tumuli in Gimhae, Malisan Tumuli in Haman, Okjeon Tumuli in Hapcheon, Songhak-dong Tumuli in Goseong, Gyo-dong and Songhyeon-dong Tumuli in Changnyeong, Jisan-dong Tumuli in Goryeong, and Yugok-ri and Durak-ri Tumuli in Namwon.
Programs include nighttime stargazing with astronomers, archaeological excavation experiences and activities that allow children to learn about the sites and serve as junior World Heritage guides.
A special evening program will travel between the seven sites from August 31 through September 9, combining activities such as meditation and yoga with traditional Korean music, ballet and cello performances.
The festival concludes September 10 in Namwon with an international symposium examining the impact of climate change on World Heritage sites and approaches to their preservation.
The Gaya Tumuli were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in September 2023.
