Busan’s Gupo market will no longer sell dogs as meat after plans were put in place to renovate the infamous dog market.
The city of Busan and the office of BokΒ district have announced their renovation plan for the dog market to become a new parking facility, with resting areas, shopping and a small park in the area.
19.9 billion won will be invested in the market project to build 3,724 square meters of a 3-story parking facility and others.
Busan city and the district office are planning to persuade the current merchants in the market with various support measures including compensation for closing down their businesses and financial support for small business owners.
The market, which has been in operation for 60 years, has been at the center of controversy in the past few years as activists have been looking to shut it down.
However, some merchants may oppose the district’s plans as they have been working in the market for nearly 50 years and want adequate compensation.
