Hong Myung-bo to Lead National Football Squad

SEOUL, South Korea — The Korea Football Association has chosen Hong Myung-bo as the new coach of South Korea’s national soccer team.

The association announced its decision following a meeting Monday at the National Football Center in Paju. Hong will lay out his ideas on how to manage and lead the Red Devils in a news conference on Tuesday. The association confirmed a list of four candidates for the position last week, but it did not reveal the names of the three other contenders.

He has signed a two-year deal, covering the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia.

Hong, who had been staying in the United States with his family, is scheduled to return to South Korea Monday evening, and he will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the National Football Center in Paju, north of Seoul, according to the KFA.

Hong was the captain of the famous South Korean squad that made it to the semi-final of the 2002 World Cup, which was hosted by South Korea and Japan. He also managed the nation’s Olympic soccer team that won a bronze medal in London last year.
