The 2026 International Ocean Film Festival will take place from June 18 to 21 at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae, showcasing 47 films from 15 countries under the theme “Standing Before the Sea.”
Now in its ninth year, the festival is the only film event in Korea dedicated exclusively to ocean-related themes, exploring the relationship between people and the sea, marine ecosystems, environmental issues, and coexistence. The festival is jointly hosted by the Busan Metropolitan Government and the Korea Ocean Business Corporation.
This year’s opening films are All Eyes on Antarctica by Catherine Frances and Campbell Brewer of the United Kingdom and Antarctica: Domain One by Joaquin and Julian Azule, both documentaries examining the environmental significance of Antarctica and the challenges facing its marine ecosystems.
The closing film, A Life Illuminated by Tasha Van Zandt and Sebastian Zeck, follows marine biologist Dr. Edith Widder as she explores the ocean’s twilight zone, highlighting both the wonder and vulnerability of deep-sea life.
Other featured films include 13 Hours to Survive: Trapped at Low Tide, a wildlife documentary following marine creatures stranded in tidal pools; the animated fantasy romance ChaO; and Mission Sea Otter – Saving California’s Kelp Forests, which explores the role of sea otters in restoring marine habitats.
For the first time, the festival will also feature an AI Ocean Film section, presenting 11 works created through artificial intelligence, including award-winning entries from a marine environmental film competition.
In addition to screenings, the festival will host guest visits (GVs), lectures and talk shows with filmmakers and marine experts, and interactive programs focused on ocean conservation. A special “Water Lovers Club” section will bring together swimming enthusiasts to watch films and share experiences related to open-water swimming.
On June 20, visitors can also explore the “Bada Marché” market at the Busan Cinema Center, featuring local brands, environmental-themed booths, and exhibition spaces highlighting marine culture and sustainability.
Tickets are priced at 5,000 won and can be purchased through the Busan Cinema Center website or at the venue during the festival.
