The first hearing in the Itaewon Burger King murder trial began yesterday.
Edward Lee, the man acquitted of the crime in the first trial 17 years ago has been called by the prosecution as a witness.
His former acquaintance, 36-year-old Arthur John Patterson, is accused of stabbing Korean college student Cho Choong-pil to death in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant in the Itaewon district of Seoul in April 1997.
Both Patterson and Lee admit to being at the crime scene, but both continue to insist the other committed the murder.
The case has attracted enormous attention in Korea over the past couple of decades, even inspiring a movie called “The Case of Itaewon Homicide,” released in 2009.
The judge in the case says he wants to complete the trial within six months.
