Korean Cinema Looks for a Comeback Year

After a sluggish year that saw no breakout Korean blockbusters and foreign franchises dominating screens, the local film industry is pinning its hopes on a tighter, star-driven lineup in 2026.

The major distributors — CJ ENM, Lotte Entertainment, NEW, Showbox, and Plus M — are set to release around 22 Korean commercial films this year, far fewer than pre-pandemic levels but positioned around proven IP and marquee filmmakers.

The most talked-about title is Na Hong-jin’s Hope, his first feature since The Wailing, arriving a decade later and set for a summer release with Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung in the lead.

Early in the year comes Im Sang-soo’s long-delayed Heaven: To the Land of Happiness, starring Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il.

The Lunar New Year box office will see a direct showdown between Ryu Seung-wan’s spy-action film Humint and Jang Hang-jun’s historical drama The Man Who Lives With the King.

Franchise follow-ups like Ode to My Father 2 and a new entry in the Tazza series are also in the pipeline, aiming to reignite audience nostalgia.

International heavyweights, including new chapters from the Avengers and Dune series, plus a fresh film from Christopher Nolan, are expected to boost overall theater traffic, adding momentum to what could become a cautiously hopeful rebound year for Korean cinemas.
