Oyster Production in Southern Region in Turmoil Over Fears of Norovirus


The southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, which is the largest domestic oyster production area in the country, has mostly stopped oyster production over fears of the Norovirus.

According to the Busan Ilbo, the Tongyeong, Geoje and Goseong area oyster industries start shipments from the middle of October every year and continue the production season until June.

However, the number of fishermen who are taking an early end of the season is increasing because prices have fallen sharply due to a decrease in domestic consumption.

The average price of 1kg of oysters per 10kg has fallen to 45,000 won from the middle of this month — about 5,000 to 10,000 won lower than normal.

Fears over the Norovirus have affected consumption nationwide as oysters are susceptible to infection mainly because they are eaten raw.
