Tourists and Locals Complain of Haeundae’s Foul-Smelling River

One of Busan’s busiest tourist areas is facing complaints about the foul-smelling odor emitting from the local river.

In particular, Dongbaek Island and the surrounding area around the Bay 101 and the Westin Chosun have all suffered this summer from the waste water smell that emits from Chuncheon River, especially on rainy days.

The river, which extends 10km from Jangsan through Haeundae New Town and deposits into the sea around Dongbaek, combines pipes which deposits rain water and sewage from the residential areas and hotels into the sea.

Haeundae-gu has been facing complaints from residents who can’t open their windows due to the smell, and tourists have been off-put by the smell in one of Busan’s busiest tour areas.

The district is planning construction on separating the sewage lines, but it isn’t expected to be completed until 2030.
