Wi-Fi service on the Busan Metro is set to undergo a major upgrade as LG Uplus and the Busan Transportation Corporation move to introduce a 5G-based system.
The upgrade will use 5G backhaul technology operating on the 3.5 GHz frequency band. Backhaul refers to the network that connects onboard Wi-Fi access points in train cars to external base stations.
The shift is expected to reduce connection delays and improve stability, particularly during peak commuting hours when usage is high.
Officials said the new system will also improve the handling of high-data activities such as video streaming, which have been limited under the current setup.
The project follows a broader initiative led by the Ministry of Science and ICT and major mobile carriers to enhance connectivity on public transportation.
It represents the second phase of similar upgrades after earlier improvements to subway systems in the Seoul metropolitan area.
A pilot program has already been conducted on select trains, with plans to expand the 5G-based Wi-Fi service across all lines within the year.
