Plans for a new bridge connecting central Tongyeong with Hansando have taken a major step forward after the project was included in the government’s national road construction plan.
The National Route 5 project linking Donam-dong and Hansan-myeon passed a preliminary feasibility review on August 26, securing its place in the 2026–2030 national road plan.
Known as the Hansan Battle Bridge project, the planned 2.7-kilometer route includes a new two-lane marine bridge and has an estimated cost of 339.6 billion won.
The bridge would provide Hansando residents with a direct road connection to Tongyeong, reducing their dependence on passenger ferries.
City officials expect it to improve access to medical care and other essential services while creating a stronger connection between the island and Tongyeong’s tourism areas.
Tongyeong has pursued the project for several years, beginning efforts to incorporate the route into National Route 5 in 2021.
The city will now work with government agencies on the remaining procedures, including the road policy review and formal plan announcement, with the goal of moving into planning and detailed design as soon as possible.
A second regional project, upgrading National Route 77 between Dosan in Tongyeong and Samsan in Goseong, was also approved as part of the national plan.
