Busan Ranks Third in Korea for Public Transit Use

Busan has the third-highest public transportation usage rate among Korea’s 17 cities and provinces, according to government transportation data.

Based on 2024 estimates from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, public transportation accounted for 22.1% of trips in Busan. Seoul ranked first at 37.0%, followed by Incheon at 23.2%, while Gyeonggi recorded 21.3%.

Nationwide, buses and rail services, including subways and trains, accounted for 20.1% of daily travel.

Gangwon had the lowest rate at 5.3%, while several other regions remained below 10%.

Busan recorded an average of nearly 11.8 million trips per day.

Private vehicles represented the largest share at 37%, followed closely by walking and cycling at 33%. Buses accounted for 13.3% and rail transportation for 8.8%.

Public transit use also varied considerably across Busan. Dong-gu recorded the highest share at 36.7%, followed by Jung-gu at 35.2% and Sasang-gu at 25.8%.

At the other end, Gangseo-gu recorded the lowest rate at 17.3%, with Haeundae-gu and Nam-gu both at 17.6%.
